The following configuration was set up: Setup

The signal generator is fed to the amplifier directly, in this way the function observed on the oscilloscope can be both visualised and heard. The frequency spectrum was viewed on the oscilloscope also. Initially the box labelled ??? was just a straight wire but eventually, signal processing electronics will assume this block.

For coming weeks...Edit

The following system was talked about regarding the running of projects:

  • One major project will be undertaken over a long period of time, i.e. a year or two. This will mainly be worked on by more senior members, i.e. 3rd and 4th years
  • Many smaller analogue projects will be undertaken. They will be decided upon by members and groups may be formed to work on any of the projects. Some of the projects people were starting to look at were:
  1. Wah-Wah Pedal
  2. Reverb Pedal
  3. Distortion Pedal
  4. Wireless Instrument Lead

For the major project, the idea that seemed to gain the most interest was a multi-FX pedal implemented on a digital architecture such as an FPGA or a microcontroller. If members are happy to undertake this as a major project, some intial questions will need to be discussed and resolved, such as:

  • What architecture to use? FPGA? microcontroller? If so, what brand? What are the expenses? Will the school pay for it?
  • Which hardware description language to use? VHDL? Verilog? C? Assembly?
  • Other, more detailed questions such as what sampling rate to use? Considerations of anti-aliasing filters, etc.

Please give these questions some thought so that we may discuss them at the next lab.
